Friday, 29 November 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
The new series of Sherlock will start in the UK on Wednesday 1st January - with the first and second episodes being shown inside a week, it was announced today.

As a publicity stunt, a hearse was driven around London this morning via location filming sites, with the BBC One show's title and date of broadcast of the first episode - entitled The Empty Hearse - spelled out in flowers.

Producer Sue Vertue started the ball rolling yesterday evening with the following tweet, alerting fans to the fact that something was going to happen:

The BBC subsequently confirmed to website Sherlockology that episode 2 - The Sign of Three - will go out on Sunday 5th January, just four days after the first one, with the third and final episode, His Last Vow, airing on Sunday 12th January. The broadcast times of all three are yet to be confirmed.

A sell-out preview screening of The Empty Hearse is to be held at the BFI on Sunday 15th December.

The series will start in the USA on Sunday 19th January on PBS at 10pm ET.

UPDATE - WEDNESDAY 4th DECEMBER: The first episode will air in the UK from 9pm to 10.25pm.
Two years after the devastating effects of The Reichenbach Fall, Dr John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance, and a comforting domestic future beckon. But, with London under threat of a huge terrorist attack, Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. It's what his best friend wanted more than anything, but for John Watson it might well be a case of "be careful what you wish for"! If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it, though, he's in for a very big surprise . . .

Sherlock Series 3: The first official pictureBookmark and Share

Tuesday, 5 November 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
The first official picture from the third series of Sherlock was released today by the BBC.

Taken by Robert Viglasky, it shows Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character and Martin Freeman as his flatmate, friend, and colleague Dr John Watson.

The BBC One show's start date in the UK is yet to be confirmed, but in a press release the BBC said:
The question on everyone's lips will finally be answered when Sherlock returns with three brand-new action-packed adventures. How did he do it? And how will John take the news that his best friend faked his own death? What will Sherlock think when he finds out John has fallen in love with Mary Morstan? She's sensible, quick-witted, and not at all taken in by Sherlock's posturing. Once again, the game is on for Sherlock and John.
Speaking about the return of the series, executive producer, writer, and co-creator Steven Moffat said:
It's been a long time since Sherlock Holmes jumped off that roof - it's time to reveal the truth about what happened between him and the pavement.
Fellow executive producer, writer, and co-creator Mark Gatiss, who has written the first episode The Empty Hearse, added:
Sherlock and John Watson are back at last! And they're just where we want them - on the streets of London having mad, thrilling adventures.

As previously reported, series 3 will start in the USA on Sunday 19th January as part of PBS's Masterpiece strand.

Sherlock is inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It has been made by Hartswood Films, with Sue Vertue as the producer. The executive producers are Beryl Vertue, Gatiss, and Moffat for Hartswood Films, Bethan Jones for the BBC, and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece. The drama was commissioned by Danny Cohen, former controller of BBC One (now director of BBC Television), and Ben Stephenson, the BBC's controller of drama commissioning.

UPDATE - 3.48pm: The BFI will be holding an exclusive preview screening of the first episode, followed by a question-and-answer session with cast and crew members, on Sunday 15th December at 1pm. Tickets go on sale to members tomorrow at 11.30am, with public booking opening on Tuesday 12th November from 11.30am. More details via this link.

A confirmed start date for the third series of Sherlock has been announced - for the USA.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr John Watson, it will be shown on PBS as part of its Masterpiece strand, beginning on Sunday 19th January at 10pm. It is the first time that its US première has been announced ahead of the UK's. I would place good money on it being at the very end or the very beginning of the year.
His wife, Sue Vertue, said in a statement:
We are hugely excited about this next series of Sherlock, and have worked closely with our partners, Masterpiece and PBS, to bring these episodes to US audiences in January. We promise our fans that Season 3 is worth waiting for.
Fellow co-creator Mark Gatiss tweeted yesterday:

Rebecca Eaton, the executive producer of Masterpiece, told Entertainment Weekly that the new episodes were "fantastic" and "jaw-dropping", adding:
They are like small movies. Benedict and Martin are so in their Sherlock-Watson groove. They are so comfortable with that relationship it's like being in the room with them.
